X (Twitter) character counter
X does not count characters one by one. Links, emoji and many scripts carry extra weight, so a post that looks short can still be over 280. This counter uses X's own weighting.
Words: 0 · Hashtags: 0
- X (Twitter) 0 / 280
Links count as 23. Emoji and most non-Latin characters count as 2.
- Same text on other platforms
- Bluesky 0 / 300
Counts graphemes: an emoji or an accented letter counts as one.
- Threads 0 / 500
- Mastodon 0 / 500
Links count as 23. 500 is the default; some servers allow more.
- Instagram 0 / 2,200
At most 30 hashtags per caption.
- LinkedIn 0 / 3,000
- Facebook 0 / 63,206
Counting happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
How X (Twitter) counts characters
- Standard accounts get 280 characters per post.
- Every link counts as 23 characters, however long it is.
- Emoji count as 2. So do Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters, and some accented letters such as Vietnamese ế.
- Images and videos do not count toward the limit.

Do links count toward the 280 limit on X?
Yes, but always as 23 characters. X shortens every link, so a 100-character URL and a 15-character URL cost the same.
Why does my Japanese or Chinese post run out of space faster?
X counts CJK characters as 2 each, so a post in Japanese, Chinese or Korean fits about 140 characters.
Can I post more than 280 characters?
Subscribers to X Premium can write much longer posts. For everyone else the limit is 280; split longer ideas into a thread.
