Mastodon character counter
Mastodon's 500-character limit has two quirks: links always count as 23, and a mention like @name@server only counts the @name part. This counter applies both.
Words: 0 · Hashtags: 0
- Mastodon 0 / 500
Links count as 23. 500 is the default; some servers allow more.
- Same text on other platforms
- X (Twitter) 0 / 280
Links count as 23. Emoji and most non-Latin characters count as 2.
- Bluesky 0 / 300
Counts graphemes: an emoji or an accented letter counts as one.
- Threads 0 / 500
- Instagram 0 / 2,200
At most 30 hashtags per caption.
- LinkedIn 0 / 3,000
- Facebook 0 / 63,206
Counting happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
How Mastodon counts characters
- 500 characters per post is the default. Your server may allow more.
- Every link counts as 23 characters, whatever its length.
- In a mention like @[email protected], only @name counts.
- A content warning counts toward the limit too.

Is the Mastodon limit always 500?
500 is the default in standard Mastodon. Each server can change it, so check your server's limit if you need more.
Why does a long link only use 23 characters?
Mastodon counts every link as 23 characters, so long URLs do not eat your post.
