How to Turn Trending News Into Social Media Posts (Before the Trend Is Over)
The hardest part of posting every day is not writing. It is deciding what to write about — and by the time you notice a trend on your own feed, everyone else has already posted about it.
Trend-driven posts work when two things are true: you catch the story while it is still rising, and you add an angle instead of repeating the headline. This guide shows a workflow that does both in a few minutes.
Step 1: Watch the right sources, ranked by momentum
A trend is not "something in the news". It is a story that several independent sources picked up in the last few hours. In PostClaw's News → Trending tab, stories are ranked by how many sources carry them and how fast they are climbing, from feeds like Hacker News, Reddit, Product Hunt, Google Trends and regional news, refreshed every hour.
Filter it down to what your audience cares about:
- Topic — Tech, Finance, Gaming, Entertainment and more.
- Region — the market you post for.
- Window — the last 24 hours for news pegs, a longer window for evergreen ideas.
If you have niche sources of your own (a blog, a subreddit, an RSS feed), add them under Sources so they show up in your Feed tab.
Step 2: One click from story to draft
Click Create post on a story. The composer opens with the source attached, and the AI writes a first draft from it — a summary in your voice with a question or angle for your audience, not a copy of the article.
That draft is a starting point. The useful edits are almost always the same:
- Add your take. Why does this matter to your followers? One sentence of opinion beats three sentences of summary.
- Cut the hedging. First drafts over-explain. Keep the hook and one supporting point.
- Check the facts you keep. If the draft repeats a number or a quote, confirm it against the source link at the top of the composer.
Step 3: Shape it per channel, then schedule
Pick the channels you post to. Each one gets its own tab and live preview, so you can keep the LinkedIn version professional, shorten the X version, and give Instagram an image. Then post now, or schedule it for when your audience is online.
Three rules for trend posts that do not feel like spam
- Be early or be different. If you are late to a story, post the angle nobody covered — the second-order effect, the counter-argument, the "what this means for X".
- Link the source. Attribution builds trust and keeps you on the right side of platform rules.
- Skip what does not fit your niche. A trend your audience does not care about costs you more in relevance than it earns in reach.
Make it a routine
Checking trends by hand once a day works. If you want it to run without you, a workflow can pull trending stories in your topics every morning, draft posts, and leave them in your queue for review. See how to automate daily social media posting.
