How Often Should a Small Business Post on Social Media?

The honest answer is: as often as you can keep up for months, not weeks. A business that posts three times a week every week does better than one that posts daily for a fortnight and then goes quiet until spring.

Below is a starting point for each platform, aimed at a small business with an hour or two a week for social media. Adjust it once you see what your own audience responds to.

A realistic starting schedule

Platform Starting point Notes
Instagram 3 posts a week Mix photos, carousels and Reels. Stories on the days in between if you can.
Facebook Page 3 posts a week Short updates, offers, events, photos. Often the same ideas as Instagram, rewritten.
TikTok 2–3 videos a week Short, simple, filmed in batches.
LinkedIn 2 posts a week One idea per post. Best for professional services and B2B.
YouTube 1 video a week or 2–3 Shorts Shorts are the easier start.
Pinterest A few Pins a week Steady beats bursts; Pins keep working for months.

You do not need all of them. Pick one or two platforms where your customers already are, and do those well.

Why consistency matters more than volume

  • People forget quickly. A steady rhythm keeps you in mind for when they need you.
  • Platforms show more of accounts that post regularly. A long silence means starting again.
  • You get better with practice. Thirty posts teach you more about your audience than five.

How to keep it up in an hour or two a week

  1. Choose your posting days and stick to them. Monday, Wednesday and Friday is easy to remember.
  2. Use themes for each day. For example: a tip on Monday, behind the scenes on Wednesday, an offer or a customer story on Friday. Our industry post ideas lists have thirty to choose from.
  3. Write a week at a time. One sitting on Sunday or Monday morning is faster than deciding what to post every day.
  4. Reuse each idea across platforms. One idea becomes an Instagram caption, a Facebook update and a LinkedIn post, each rewritten for its platform.
  5. Schedule everything. Once a post is scheduled, you don't have to remember it.

Signs you should post more, or less

Post more if most of your posts get replies or messages and you have more ideas than slots. Post less, but better, if you are rushing posts out to hit a number and they get no response.
